An Anal Fissure
is a tear occurring in the anus (the opening through which stool passes out of
the body) that extends up into the anal fissures usually cause pain during bowel movements that often
is severe.
Pain
and discomfort relief and torn lining healing is the goal of this treatment. Those
that do not last longer than 6 weeks are acute anal fissures which can be
treated with self-care that heals on their own. Those that last longer than 6
weeks are chronic anal fissures which may require surgery procedures or
medication to heal.
Inspection
of the anus is usually limited to looking for crack or tear in the skin
surrounding the anus. Due to the amount of pain and discomfort, rectal
examination is usually deferred as it only inserts finger into the rectum to
check for abnormalities and to check for blood in the stool.
Flexible
Sigmoidoscopy, which health care practitioner inserts a short lighted tube
into the anus to check the area can be considered if fissure is not seen and if
there is a doubt about the diagnosis done. An anesthetic called lidocaine
ointment is usually used to lessen the discomfort during the procedure.
No other blood tests or X-rays are needed.
