Hemorrhoid Treatment By New Procedure

Ultrasound

This procedure is done on an outpatient basis and can be done fairly quickly, sometimes in as little as 20 minutes. Most people are back at work within 48 hours. After the procedure, a lot of people feel like they need to have a bowel moment, but this symptom goes away over the next two days. There is a minimum of post-operative bleeding and in some cases no bleeding. This procedure also results in a minimum of long term side effect associated with hemorrhoidectomies such as infection, fissures, incontinence and anal bleeding.

Surgery

Doppler-guided, transanalhemorrhoidal dearterialization is a minimally invasive treatment using an ultrasound doppler to accurately locate the arterial blood inflow. These arteries are then "tied off" and the prolapsed tissue is sutured back to its normal position. It has a slightly higher recurrence rate, but fewer complications compared to a hemorrhoidectomy.

Banding or Rubber Ligation

Banding is an office procedure used to treat internal hemorrhoids. Also called rubber band ligation, this procedure involves using a tight band around the base of the hemorrhoid to cut off its blood supply. This usually requires two or more procedures that take place about two months apart. It is not painful, but you may feel pressure or mild discomfort. This is not recommended for those taking blood thinners because of the high risk of bleeding complications.

Coagulation Therapy

Coagulation therapy is also called infrared photocoagulation. This treatment uses infrared light, heat, or extreme cold to make the hemorrhoid retract and shrink. It is another type of procedure that it is done at your doctor’s office, and it is usually performed along with an anoscopy.

Anoscopy is a visualization procedure in which a scope is inserted several inches into your rectum. The scope allows the doctor to see. Most people experience only mild discomfort or cramping during treatment.
